UNDERSTANDING YOUR OBLIGATIONS

What Is an Individual Tax Return in Australia?

An individual tax return ( formally known as an Individual Income Tax Return)  is the annual declaration every eligible Australian resident lodges with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

It covers the financial year running from 1 July to 30 June and reports your total taxable income, the deductions you’re entitled to claim, and any tax offsets that reduce the amount you owe.

The ATO uses your lodged return to calculate one of three outcomes: you’ve paid exactly the right amount of tax throughout the year (no refund, no bill); you’ve overpaid (the ATO issues a refund); or you’ve underpaid (you’ll receive a tax bill). For most salaried Australians, overpayment is common because employers withhold tax at a standard rate that doesn’t account for your individual deductions.

In Australia, lodging a tax return is not optional once your taxable income exceeds the tax-free threshold. For 2025-26, the tax-free threshold is $18,200. If you earned above this amount — from employment, freelance work, investments, rental income, or any combination — you are legally required to lodge by 31 October 2026.

Failure to do so can result in Failure to Lodge (FTL) penalties issued by the ATO, which start at $313 and can increase every 28 days the return remains outstanding.

Even if your income was below $18,200, lodging is still recommended if tax was withheld from any wages or payments during the year, because without lodging, you cannot claim that money back

Key Fact: The ATO processed over 14.7 million individual tax returns in 2022-23. The average individual tax refund for that year was approximately $2,800. A qualified tax accountant typically identifies deductions that self-lodgers miss, directly increasing your refund outcome.

LODGEMENT OBLIGATIONS

Do You Need to Lodge a Tax Return?

Many Australians are unsure whether they are required to lodge. The ATO has clear rules, but individual circumstances vary. You are required to lodge an individual tax return for the 2025-26 financial year if any of the following apply:

  1. Your taxable income exceeded $18,200 during the year
  2. Tax was withheld from any income you received — even if it was below the threshold
  3. You had income from a business, rental property, investments, shares, or cryptocurrency
  4. You received an Australian Government allowance or benefit (e.g. JobSeeker, Youth Allowance)
  5. You are a working holiday visa holder (417 or 462) who earned income in Australia
  6. You have a HECS-HELP or VSL debt and earned above the compulsory repayment threshold ($54,435 for 2025-26)
  7. The ATO has contacted you and asked you to lodge
  8. You operated as a sole trader, contractor, or freelancer at any point during the year

If you are still unsure, the safest approach is to contact AMA Accountants for a no-obligation consultation. Our registered tax agents will assess your situation and tell you exactly where you stand — before any commitment is required.

MAXIMISE YOUR REFUND

What Deductions Can You Claim on Your Individual Tax Return?

One of the most significant advantages of using a registered tax accountant over a DIY lodgement is deduction maximisation. The ATO allows individuals to claim a wide range of work-related expenses, investment costs, and personal deductions — but only if you know they exist, and only if they are claimed correctly. Incorrect or inflated claims are one of the main triggers for ATO audits.

Here is an overview of the most commonly claimed and commonly missed deductions for individual tax returns in Australia:

Work-Related Deductions

  1. Vehicle and travel expenses — driving between work sites, client visits, or carrying equipment
  2. Home office expenses — if you work from home, you can claim a portion of electricity, internet, and office equipment
  3. Uniforms, protective clothing, and laundry costs
  4. Tools, equipment, and technology used for work
  5. Self-education expenses directly related to your current role
  6. Union and professional association membership fees
  7. Subscriptions to industry journals, apps, or professional software

Investment Deductions

  1. Rental property expenses — interest on investment loans, property management fees, repairs, insurance, and depreciation
  2. Investment income expenses — fees paid for financial advice, tax agent fees from the prior year
  3. Capital gains tax (CGT) concessions — 50% discount if you held an asset for over 12 months
  4. Cryptocurrency gains and losses — now a compulsory reporting area scrutinised by the ATO

Personal & Lifestyle Deductions

  1. Income protection insurance premiums (where not held inside super)
  2. Charitable donations to DGR-registered organisations
  3. Cost of managing your tax affairs — including the prior year’s tax agent fee

Important ATO Rule: To claim a work-related deduction, you must have spent the money yourself, it must be directly related to earning your income, and you must be able to provide a record (receipt or bank statement).

The ATO has data-matching technology that cross-checks claims against industry benchmarks. Overclaiming is flagged automatically.

COMMON ISSUES WE FIX

Late Returns, ATO Debts, and Missed Refunds — We Handle All of It

Not everyone comes to us with a straightforward return for the current year. A significant portion of Adelaide residents come to us in more complicated situations — and that’s exactly what we’re experienced in handling.

Late or Overdue Tax Returns

If you have not lodged a tax return for one or more years, you are not alone. The ATO reports that hundreds of thousands of Australians have outstanding returns at any given time. The longer you leave it, the greater the risk of compounding penalties and ATO enforcement action.

AMA Accountants helps clients catch up on multiple years of overdue lodgements, communicates directly with the ATO on your behalf, and in many cases can negotiate to reduce or waive FTL penalties where valid grounds exist.

ATO Audit or Compliance Letter

Receiving a letter from the ATO can be alarming — particularly if it references a specific deduction or income amount the ATO believes was understated or overclaimed.

Our team reviews the correspondence, prepares a response, and represents you throughout any audit or review process. Most ATO queries are resolved without further action when handled promptly by a qualified tax agent.

Second Look Assessments

Did you lodge your own return last year and feel uncertain about the outcome? We offer Second Look Assessments — a professional review of a previously lodged return to identify missed deductions or errors.

If a correction is warranted, we lodge an amendment with the ATO and recover the difference. In many cases, clients recover hundreds to thousands of dollars from prior year returns.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Individual Tax Return — Questions Answered

For the 2025-26 financial year, the ATO’s self-lodgement deadline for individual tax returns is 31 October 2026. If you are registered with a tax agent such as AMA Accountants, you may qualify for an extended lodgement deadline — often extending well into 2027. To access this extension, you must be registered with a tax agent before the 31 October deadline passes. Contact our Adelaide office to register before then.

Missing the 31 October deadline triggers the ATO’s Failure to Lodge (FTL) penalty. For individuals, this starts at $313 and increases by $313 for every 28-day period the return remains outstanding, up to a maximum of $1,565. Interest may also accrue on any unpaid tax liability. The ATO can also refer overdue lodgements to debt collection. If you have missed the deadline, do not wait — contact AMA Accountants immediately. We handle late returns regularly and can communicate directly with the ATO on your behalf.

The cost of a professionally prepared tax return in Adelaide depends on the complexity of your income situation — a simple PAYG return is priced differently from one involving rental income, investments, or sole trader activity. AMA Accountants provides clear, upfront pricing before work begins. There are no hidden fees. It is also worth noting that tax agent fees are themselves tax-deductible in the following financial year, which reduces the real cost of using our service.

Yes. AMA Accountants offers a fully online tax return service for Adelaide residents and Australians located anywhere in the country. You upload your documents through our secure portal, we prepare your return, you review and approve it digitally, and we lodge electronically with the ATO. The entire process can be completed without visiting our office.

Most individual tax refunds are processed and deposited by the ATO within 10 to 14 business days of electronic lodgement. Paper lodgements take significantly longer — up to 50 days. Refunds may be delayed if your bank account details on file with the ATO are outdated, if the return is selected for manual review, or if there is an outstanding ATO debt offset against your refund. We monitor the status of every return we lodge and follow up on your behalf if delays occur.

No. A tax return is the document you submit to the ATO. A Notice of Assessment (NOA) is the document the ATO sends back to you after processing your return. Your NOA confirms your total taxable income, the tax assessed, any Medicare levy, any HECS-HELP repayment amount, and the outcome — refund amount or tax liability. It is important to keep your NOA on file as it may be required when applying for a home loan, rental property, or government benefits.

Yes. We lodge tax returns for prior financial years regularly. There is no strict time limit on how far back you can lodge, but ATO guidelines generally allow individuals to claim refunds for returns lodged within two years of the original due date. Beyond that, penalties may apply but can sometimes be negotiated. If you have multiple outstanding years, we can work through them systematically and help you re-establish good standing with the ATO.
